As someone who worked with George on the format and tools to run the event, it was great to hear Greg and Foy discuss the effects of this event within their league. We all know that in most tournaments, the prize money is fed by the 80-90% of the people who probably don't have a chance to win. This event, while reducing the top prize money, in a way increases it, as more people show up to have a chance to win B or C bracket money and raises the total prize pool. That keeps the top players interested and really gives the majority of your league players a chance to participate in a format suited to everyone. It also guarantees that you'll play at least four, best-of-five matches.

Brian- To your points - ANYTHING that gets more players to an event is good. I think that's one of the challenges we face in the darts community. If only the top players show up, the sport will fall in upon itself.

There's always risks with handicapped events. It's inevitable. The beauty of the Players Tournament is that you can manage your players/groups however it suits your league/players. In Tennessee, they used league rankings. When we run it, we put previous winners into the A group, and then do qualifying. The self-correcting part of it all is that everyone wants to shoot for the top dollars, so they try to qualify high and be part of the A group. (IIRC - the 3rd place in the A group has a prize similar to 1st place in the C group).

Re: Knuck You

Wish I could get this in iTunes, great job!!!

Re: 2012-The Year of the Dart Player

Twas the flight before Christmas...

Happy Holidays dart world.

Re: 2012-The Year of the Dart Player

obviously not me... mediocre at best

Re: 2012-The Year of the Dart Player

yah i stole them from some guy who thinks he's good at darts. lol

Re: 2012-The Year of the Dart Player

hey, nice photos ;) I wonder who took those?

Re: Episode 55-Live at the DPNY Tour Finals with Alan Keoghan

don't be shy ...

Re: Thorn’s World Cup World Tour Part Tres

I can hardly wait to read about adventures through Central America. Chess does this, as do other individual sports. I implemented something similar in my local team league. The player rating system works itself out after about 1-2 seasons. It encourages players of all abilities to compete.

I converted our mid-season memorial shoot to a weighted A/B draw and participation nearly doubled.

Re: Episode 52-Darts Legalities and Special Updates

the funny thing is, the guy who "created" facebook actually stole the idea himself so talk about a bunch of hypocrites!!

Re: Jerry Van Loan – Does Darts and America Proud

I too had the pleasure of meeting Jerry and Cali, at the World Cup itself nonetheless, and without a doubt, both are wonderful people and fabulous representatives of darts and the United States. In fact, the entire team made us proud. I'll also add that, in my opinion, the ADO is doing a great job too--it's not easy dealing with all the divisions and rules that plague our sport, and I have no interest in adding to any negativity on those subjects. On the other hand, my favorite Jerry and Cali moments are these...

Seeing Cali's jovial smile and excitement, at the opening ceremonies, her pride at the closing ceremonies, and her resilience and perseverance and class in the heat of battle, but especially after disappointing results. More than once, the number two woman on the team carried the weight in some crucial legs and matches. Ms. West is someone I hope to see and enjoy more and more often.

Jerry too. Besides his humble demeanor and commitment to bad-guy-stopping career, we had quite a few laughs. My personal highlights of Jerry include witnessing a fabulous and imperative checkout against Team Canada when Team USA was down early but mounting an intense comeback, just barely losing in the final leg--a leg that wouldn't have happened without Jerry. Watching him shake hands with his opponent, then turning to exhale after that double was indicative of the intense pressure of the situation. But, even more so, my favorite moment with Jerry was playing darts in a bar outside the tourney, in the town of Castlebar, with some young locals, and watching the joy of darts come to Jerry again, hitting a ton80 against two young dart players who were equally thrilled to have the chance to play a World Cup player, as classy and real as Mr. Van Loan.

Lastly, I'll add that Jim Widmayer, Larry Butler, Scott Wollaston, and my good friend Brenda Roush, are all great people and great representatives of US darts, and the ADO has a less than enviable job navigating the politics. Though there are many others that 'could, would, or should' have been there, this year was the year that fate and destiny and luck brought these six people together, and personally, I was thrilled to spend my first world cup with this team, and the organizations that make it possible. Next time, I hope we have two youth players to join them.

As always, great reporting Dartoid.

Re: Episode 51-Bullseye TV Game Show

Great interview. However, I think you guys might have misinterpreted what Paul Lim said about the difference between soft-tip and steel-tip. He wasn't talking about how it's physically scored, I believe he's talking about the mindset associated with the game. In steeltip the best player is the player who hits the most triples and doubles i.e. hits the little target he's trying to put a dart into. Paul Lim seems to be saying that soft-tip is different, because the targets are bigger. Therefore, in soft-tip not missing is the principal focus. Both games seem to boil down to the same thing, more or less, but I thought he did a nice job of articulating why they seem like such different games.

Re: Episode 46-MLD Darts and DartsLive Asia

another great show.
